Global Competence

Recently, I stumbled upon the webpage of an organization called, "Asia Society."  Here is the mission of the organization: "Asia Society is the leading educational organization dedicated to promoting mutual understanding and strengthening partnerships among peoples, leaders and institutions of Asia and the United States in a global context. Across the fields of arts, business, culture, education, and policy, the Society provides insight, generates ideas, and promotes collaboration to address present challenges and create a shared future.  Founded in 1956, Asia Society is a nonpartisan, nonprofit educational institution with offices in Hong Kong, Houston, Los Angeles, Manila, Melbourne, Mumbai, New York, San Francisco, Seoul, Shanghai, and Washington, DC."  The article I read titled, "Global Competence: Prepare Youth to Engage with the World," was a great read.  It also comes with pdf copy of the book on the topic and discussion questions.  All of this is free by the way!  Check it out.

Teaching a People's History: The Zinn Education Project

The Zinn Education Project supports and promotes the work of Howard Zinn and his best selling book, "A People's History of the United States."  The project is coordinated by two non-profit organizations, Rethinking Schools and Teaching for Change. Its goal is to introduce students to a more accurate, complex, and engaging understanding of United States history than is found in traditional textbooks and curricula.  You can check out the website and resources by clicking here.

Few Minority Teachers In Classrooms, Gap Attributed To Bias And Low Graduation Rates

Here is a very interesting article about the disproportionality between students of color and teachers of color. Money quote, "Minority students make up more than 40 percent of the national public school population, while only 17 percent of the country's teachers are minorities," according to a report released this week by the Center for American Progress.  Click here to read more!

Here is another great resources for families and educators. Colorín Colorado is an educational initiative of WETA, the flagship public television and radio station in the nation's capital. I love stumbling upon good reads and today I found a great one! Paul C. Gorski is an assistant professor in Integrative Studies at George Mason University in Washington, DC, and the founder of EdChange and Multicultural Pavilion.
